READ IT TO ME!
In Senegal where Mr. Camara is from, music is generally performed by a specific tribe known as the Jèlè people, but Thierno who hails from more of a socio-political family was naturally talented in the art of music.
A prodigy of sorts, he instinctively understood how to play nearly any musical instrument he came into contact with from an early age, and was destined it seemed to be counted among the great musicians of the world.
By his late teens Thierno Camara was already being recognized internationally and had began to travel around Europe and Africa with some of Africa’s greatest mega-stars.
In addition to the guitar, drums, various other indigenous stringed and percussion instruments he could play as well as his natural ability to compose and produce hit songs, Thierno was classically trained to play piano in his youth but the electric Bass guitar which he is most well known for became his favorite instrument of all.
By his late 20s Mr Camara had settled in New York where he met and toured with various well-known musicians throughout Canada and the United States. From there he made musical contributions to the albums of some of the greatest American Jazz, Hip Hop, and Rhythm & Blues musicians of our time.
Thierno always had a love of Jazz and other forms of American music which he could see a clear straight line to from the many indigenous West African genres of music he grew up playing, such as Mbalax, Koro-boro and Wassoulou which he said seem to contain the root of many of the styles of music out of America such as the “call and response” interplay between singers and musical instruments found in American Folk, Gospel, Reggae, Rock n Roll, Blues, and Jazz music.
He was once quoted as saying ”As a young man I mostly wanted to go to America to meet, and hopefully get to perform with two people, one was Miles Davis and the other was Jaco Pastorius” but unfortunately, he learned that both had passed away long before he got there.
Nonetheless, Thierno did get to perform with many of the greats who were still alive at the time like Dennis Davis, Ornette Coleman, Greg Osby, and Cornelius Kreusch. He always acknowledges the tremendous influence these and other American and Caribbean musicians had on him growing up, musicians like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Toots and the Maytals, Jimi Hendrix, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Aretha Franklin and Chaka Kahn to name a few.
We recognize the exceptional musical talent of Thierno Camara, who continues performing live and you can find some of his music online by clicking the album cover images below and to the right.
